Chronicles of Leadership

Wendy Lockinge, Vice Chancellor of a university set in the North of England, and formerly a celebrity detective, is battling against a drug crisis on campus. She also has to manage her problem relationship with daughter Jessica, who accuses her of abandoning the search for her missing father.

When Jessica disappears from school, Wendy assembles a team of her university irregulars to find her, including a scientist with a pet python he uses to make his lectures more interesting, a local news reporter, a student activist, and a lecherous TV pundit. A series of mysterious and violent deaths occur in a nearby top secret research establishment, which seem connected to the drug problems that are plaguing the university.

The team has stumbled into a battle for a century old secret concealed in the archives of the university. Wendy finds herself in a race to rescue Jessica, and to prevent members of an international conspiracy from discovering the secret, and from plunging the world into anarchy. Throughout the book, its characters wrestle with the dilemma of trust. Why is Wendy unable to tell Jessica the truth about her father? Which offers of help from outside contacts are genuine, and which are traps laid by a false friend? The truth is revealed only after a life or death struggle for ownership of the secret of the Chronicles of Leadership, in an underground experiment that has gone terrifyingly wrong.

“It was a pleasure featuring your articles in the alumni Newsletter. You add a further dimension to the newsletter and numbers have certainly increased in the last couple of months.”

The Monograph Series

Leaders We Deserve monographs draw on over a thousand posts originally published on the Leaders We Deserve blog over the period 2006-2016. They also include more experimental fictional content ‘based on true stories’.
The monographs explore a space between case studies and creative writing; between the scholarly style of the traditional textbook, and the dynamism of the e-format.
They offer the possibility of a learning community in which readers and author are able to interact and influence the contents of the monographs. Each post is linked to theoretical ideas such as charismatic leadership, critical theory, discursive leadership, and corporate social responsibility. Many posts have been taught as mini-business cases within the Manchester Business School executive MBA programmes around the world.

No 1: The Manchester Method

The first monograph (originally published in 2015) updates twelve posts from the perspectives of Business School tutors, leadership researchers and MBA executives. It provides a historical record of the roles played by educational pioneers such as Eric Miller, Stafford Beer, Enid Mumford, Etienne Wenger, Grigor McClelland and Reg Revans. Topics covered include: The Manchester Method as Social Networking; The Importance of Communities of Practice; and Creative Leadership and Team Effectiveness.”

No 2: Tennis Matters

Tennis Matters is the second of a series of monographs based on materials on leadership published on the Leaders We Deserve website. The readership was primarily leaders, leadership teachers and coaches, as well as other professionals from the business and public sectors.

Over 1000 posts were published in the period 2006-2015.
In this book, the original posts dealing with tennis have been updated, and a series of quizzes added which broadens the appeal to anyone who, like the author, considers that ‘tennis matters’

“We regularly use Tennis Matters and Tennis Tensions for our monthly quizzes.”

– Damson Caterers, The Northern Tennis Club, Didsbury, Greater Manchester

“Tennis Matters: Any club tennis player, however good or bad, would be entertained and instructed in equal measure by this delightful book.”

No 3: Mourinho Matters

From a study of over a thousand posts written about leadership, one man above all seems to characterise the charismatic style. That man is Jose Mourinho. The press loves him for his public performances at press conferences. Sometimes Jose loves them back. Sometimes he changes into a sulky little boy with a catalogue of grievances against referees, the football administrators or other managers. He announced himself as The Special One early in his career, and has rarely failed to live up to the description. His story was always destined to end in triumph and disaster.

“The popular belief persists that one person is responsible for a team’s achievements. No-one has embodied this belief more prominently than José Mourinho, who has exerted a mighty act of will in maintaining the idea that a team’s success can be attributed to his special abilities. How does he do this? Tudor Rickards traces his methods, his successes and failures, in this engrossing book.”

John Potts
Professor of Media
Macquarie University

“Thanks for your Mourinho book, I really enjoyed it. Keep up the writing, you do it so well”

Prof Sir Cary L Cooper, CBE

No 4: Tennis Tensions

On September 11, 2015, World number one Serena Williams walks out on to the court of the vast Arthur Ashe stadium for her date with destiny. Twenty thousand people roar encouragement. She is playing in the semi-finals of the US Open. If she wins she will be one match away from achieving what is already being called the Serena Slam, of winning all four major tournaments of 2015. It will confirm her as the greatest player of the modern era.

Now in her thirties, her chances of achieving the feat are reducing every year. She is nervous. The press build-up has been monumental. It is the magnitude for the challenge she faces in part influenced my decision to study the tensions of the players competing in this one grand slam event.

No 5: The Double Houdini

41Mr1J32L2LThe Double Houdini is again ‘based on a true story’. It is derived from my experiences in a community of which I am part, which is to be found deep in the sleepy shires of East Cheshire. The community-based club has been given the fictional name of the East Cheadle Chess Club.

That being said, my intention has been to imagine not report, to bring characters to life, as an imagined and yet realistic case study.

The book is about leadership, community, personal crises and struggles against the odds that would have tested the escapologist Harry Houdini.

For non-chess players I suggest you accept the mentions of chess terms. Susan, who reviews my books dispassionately says they do not get in the way of the story. These are mostly mentions of openings with exotic names such as the Sicilian Dragon, The Kings Indian Defence, The Leningrad Dutch, and the Queen’s Gambit. There are also mentions of time controls, and in particular the ingenious Fischer Time Control invented by the great World Champion Bobby Fischer.

Students of leadership will be helped by the Notes and References section. A few puzzles (chess players also like puzzles) are also to be found in the appended quizzes, which are included for entertainment, although they may also have some value as a student learning aid.
